Aaron Kula’s Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra Presents ‘A Very Jewish Concert on Christmas Day’ at the Levis JCC

The Adolph & Rose Levis JCC is excited to welcome accordionist and music director Aaron Kula as he leads his critically acclaimed nine-member Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra (KCJO) in a Klezmer concert on Tuesday, December 25 at 3 p.m at Zinman Hall.  ‘A Very Jewish Concert on Christmas Day’ will also feature Miami based guest vocalist Julie Jacobs and acclaimed storyteller Caren Schnur Neile.  Together, they will perform a variety show filled with entertaining songs, stories and jazzed up arrangements of classic Yiddish, Israeli, and Chassidic melodies.  Tickets range from $30-$40.

KCJO’s concert is packed with a mix of energetic songs from the Yiddish Theater and Klezmer melodies, all performed using original arrangements.  Kula and his bandmates play genre-bending original arrangements and use a mixture of jazz harmonies and Latin rhythms.  Jewish melodies from the band’s extensive American Klezmer song book include music by Sholem Secunda, Joseph Rumshinky, Abe Ellstein, Dave Tarras, and Allexander Olshanetsky.  The audience will experience a Cuban Hora, a Klezmer Mambo, and Yiddish songs from the 1930s and 40s sung by Julie Jacobs in a jazz style.  Caren Neile will share two touching folktales that will evoke laughter and joyfulness in the audience.  The concert will conclude with two world-famous Israeli songs to celebrate Israel at 70.

This year mark’s KCJO’s 21st season since its first performance in 1997.  “This concert is for anyone who wants to have a good time, hear great musicians, and rediscover songs with a fresh sound, a concert not to miss,” says Kula.  “This concert has become an annual tradition at the JCC and a great way to usher in 2019.”
