Faces Behind the Fear: Burgers of Enigma Haunt

Clowns can be scary. The idea of having someone hide their true selves behind make-up is the overwhelming theme behind many of the greatest horror icons of all time. Heck, even today, the idea of having creepy clowns beckoning kids into the woods scares adults and children alike.

At Enigma Haunt in Boca Raton, clowns have always been the highlight of the event. You are undoubtedly familiar with Otto Ringwald, the Ringmaster of the show, but have you met Burgers?

Do you like scary movies? I love horror movies, mostly the crappy 80’s horror movies like The Fly, or old school Vincent Price films. My favorite all time horror has to be The Shining.

What inspired you to become a scareactor? It started when I was in high school, I worked in my first haunted house in Melbourne, Florida called “The Haunts.” I fell in love. I love being able to take a break from reality and make my own character come alive and entertain people.

Who is your favorite Hollywood creature creator/make-up artist, and why? Maybe not a creature so-to-speak, but all the way, Jack Nicholson from the Shining. There are really awesome stories on the making of The Shining and how he would pace back and forth and create negative energy even before cameras were rolling. Lots of crew members admitted to feeling intensely uncomfortable with the negative energy, which made the acting that much better. I use this technique now when I act, before a guest even sees me, I am pacing back and forth like a mad man.

How long do you spend in make-up for the haunt, or do you always look like that? I am wearing my clown outfit right now. It’s a lifestyle. Ok, for real, I actually work as a manager during operational hours of the haunt, so I don’t act much, I am only Burgers at outings and on the campaign trail for the President of Fear. I fill in acting roles occasionally and usually make-up takes no longer than 20 minutes.

Do you like haunted attractions? If so, which is your favorite? I love them. My favorite attraction, hands down, is Enigma Haunt of course. My next favorite is the Wisconsin Fear Grounds. I actually proposed to my fiancé there. (she is a haunter too).

What is your motivation for your character? Burgers is a very unique character. The motivation is… well, to keep the party going…

There are many different scare techniques used at haunted attractions. How do you do it? You can’t scare everyone, but you can entertain them. We train and we watch other haunters scare. We use lots of improv acting and techniques. The biggest and best way to scare is to scare and disappear. Meaning we come at you fast and hard, then disappear in darkness leaving you vulnerable for the dark to sneak up on you again and again.

What can fans expect from your part of Enigma Haunt? They can expect individualized scares. No ‘conga’ lines where you see the scares happen 20 feet in front of you. Intense, in your face entertainment with an amazing, attention to detail sets and characters.

What inspired you to run for President of Fear? Well, I am not quite sure how I got involved. It’s all kind of blurry. But I am fairly sure I am the only candidate that can touch the hearts of the people. I speak the truth, no fluff.

Which of the presidential candidates would do better at Enigma Haunt? (Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton?) Bernie Sanders. Just kidding. I try not to follow politics. Really though, 400 million people in America and those are the choices? Vote Burgers for President.

What advice would you give someone interested in working in a haunted attraction? You gotta try it, it has been an amazing journey for me. I’ve learned lots of things that I can take in our real world life — building stuff, painting stuff, communication skills, manager skills, and engineering props! You also will make lifelong friends in the process! I met my fiancé in the haunt, and I wouldn’t trade her for the world!
