The story of the mad scientist and his obsession with the unknown is one as old as horror itself. Whether it be monsters, experiments gone wrong, or simply the exploration of a truly gifted (though deranged) mind, the character appears in virtually every haunted adventure you can think of .
Some portray it better than others, and once you meet Doctor Grant at Enigma Haunt, you won’t be sure where the character starts, and the actor begins!
Do you like scary movies? (The best opening question in film history, IMHO) NO! I am actually really terrified of scary movies. When we have movie nights as a crew, I typically skip out if the movie is actually scary.
Do you enjoy haunted attractions? If so, which is your favorite? Kind of goes with above, but I am really easily scared. I didn’t go to many haunts before finding Enigma Haunt. I did Halloween Horror Nights and Fright Nights, of course. I have also gone to Shallow Grave with my haunt friends and that was really awesome.
There are several school of scaring, if you will. What technique works best for you? Proximity and creepiness. I like to get close. I like to really be immersive. I adlib a lot and use a lot of dialogue to take the guests out of their reality.
Can you tell us more about your character? The great scientist, Dr. Grant, having become bored with traditional schools of science began dabbling in the occult. He became corrupt by a malevolent spirit, Amara, and has become obsessed with trying to find her. He performs weird, invasive experiments on himself and others, as well as collecting creatures he finds as he travels through the portals opened by Amara.
What would your ultimate haunted attraction consist of? Zombie Paintball
What advice would you give someone interested in working in a haunted attraction? Step out of your comfort zone! There is so much you can learn, so much you can experience by joining a haunt family. Take it from someone who is NOT a horror enthusiast by any stretch of the imagination, 5 years later this is still one of the coolest things I have ever done with my time.
With all the haunted attractions out there, why should someone visit Enigma Haunt? Honestly, our actors and attention to detail. Our actors really go the extra mile to make the experience as amazing as possible for our guests. You can feel the difference with our dedication and our heart. Our sets are fantastic, but our actors make it all come to life.
What inspired you to become a scareactor? I was working for a debt consolidation company and they wanted to do a commercial for “Night of the Living Debt” … and asked if anyone had acting experience. So I lied and said I did because I wanted to be on TV. The makeup artist who turned me into a zombie said I was a lot of fun to work with and gave me her card. Next thing I knew; I was auditioning at Enigma Haunt!
Who is your favorite Hollywood creature creator/make-up artist, and why? I don’t really know anyone’s names. I love whoever the team is that works with Guillermo Del Toro. His monsters are always insane.
How long do you spend in make-up for the haunt, or do you always look like that? As long as they’ll let me. I’m always asking the make-up artists to do more, or go heavy on my look. They don’t always have time, but on occasion they’ll spoil me! Typically, I’ll let my hair and facial hair grow wildly before haunt season so we have more to play with.
What is your motivation for your character? When I was a kid, I wanted to be a scientist, but I am terrible at math and science… So now I get to be one every October!
What can fans expect from your part of Enigma Haunt? I’m going to give you my all. I’m going to craft a narrative for you, so pay attention to the plot! I’m going to interact with you. I am making you part of my story, so play along! You’ll have way more fun that way. Understand that I am going to challenge your comfort. It’s gonna get a liiiiiitttle weiiiiird… but that’s fiiiiine!
Enigma Haunt was just ranked #1 in Top Haunts in Florida and voted as #2 nationally in The Scare Factor’s 31 Must See Haunt List, the only other Florida haunt making that national list came in at #17.
Remember that Halloween is a time for fun and frivolity. It is a time to come out of your shell, and to acknowledge the mischievous spirit that resides within all of us. Be sure to keep following Palm Beach Happening for news on other spooky events in the Palm Beaches. If you know of another local event that would appreciate the undead light shone upon it, please let us know!
