Governor’s Hurricane Conference Awards Seven Student Scholarships

The 32nd Annual Governor’s Hurricane Conference®, being held this week at the Palm Beach County Convention Center has announced its annual conference scholarships, provided to college students across the state.

“We are excited to again fund students from across Florida to attend the Governor’s Hurricane Conference.  The number of institutions offering emergency management curriculum continues to grow as well as the number of students seeking degrees within our profession.  It is an honor to provide these exceptional students opportunities to mingle with seasoned professionals and take advantage of the varied workshops and training sessions.  We know this year will again be an exciting opportunity to support the transition of bright and ambitious students to young professionals within the field of emergency management.”

While at the conference this week, scholarship recipients are participating in courses and workshops, a roundtable discussion where they will make presentations and hear from professionals in the field of emergency management, and have the opportunity to be mentored by a professional emergency manager. In addition, all recipients must commit to volunteer 18 hours as a room monitor for the conference or take on other duties as needed.

The program was developed in 2010 through the committed efforts of our Educational Outreach Committee consisting of representatives from the academic community as well as our sponsoring agencies.  Please refer to the “Committee Members” section of our app for identification of those members.  We extend a special “thank you” to Florida State University’s Emergency Management & Homeland Security Program for the development and maintenance of an automated, online application and evaluation system. In addition, a special thanks to Florida Disaster Consult, LLC for its contribution to enhance the students’ experience.  New contributors this year include Disaster Program & Operations, CrowderGulf and AshBritt.
