The world of competitive eating is vast and diverse, featuring individuals from all walks of life with one common love: food! This week, we are proud to highlight a man whose stomach is almost as big as his heart; Darrien Thomas!
What’s your favorite food? That’s easy; it’s corn but I might take a break from it for awhile.
How did you get started in eating competitions? I have been a fan of Competitive Eating for a long time and at the age of 16 I was pick out of the crowd for a local Pizza Contest which also featured Takeru Kobayashi and ate 15 slices in 12 mins. From there I went on to be crowned the World Poutine Amateur Eating Champion of the World. This year I turned pro after joining Major League Eating.
There seem to be many different styles of eating in competition. What is your philosophy on eating? Get it down and not die. But, in all seriousness, a lot of it is mental and I need to push myself past my physical and mental boundaries. With more experience at the table my numbers will increase.
Of all the events you’ve competed in, which is your favorite? The World Poutine Eating Championship, since it is my local contest and all my family can attend. Plus, I am the Cheese Curd so it lends its self towards that.
Did you enjoy your time in the Palm Beaches? It was amazing and beautiful down there. Plus, it was awesome to experience it with my mom.
Can you tell us a little bit about your previous experience in competitive eating? I have competed in WPEC twice, winning once with 5 pounds in 5 mins. I competed in my first pro contest in Miami for the Croquetas Eating Championship, which I placed 5th behind top ranked competitors. I just competed in the Sweet Corn Fiesta, where I ate 40 ears in 12 mins to tie with Badlands Booker for 5th.
What is the funniest thing to happen to you in your career? My kick start to my career was due to a DQ in a rock, paper, scissors match after my adversary choose dynamite.
What advice would you give to up and coming eaters interested in competition? I am a living example that you can do whatever you put your mind to. I am from a small town up in Canada and I am competing with the big names of competitive eating, while making a name for myself.
What’s your next eating challenge? I am competing in my first Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Championship qualifier in Cincinnati where I hope to spring the upset and claim my seat at Coney Island.
