Rev. Dr. Lea Brown, Senior Pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of the Palm Beach Gardens (MCCPB), the largest faith-based community in Palm Beach County dedicated to serving the local LGBT community and its family members and friends, today announced that 140 members and friends attended the annual Rainbow Ball on April 14. This is MCCPB’s largest gala fundraiser, a “fun-filled evening of dancing and dining, entertainment and socializing.”
Held in the Majestic Ballroom of the Airport Hilton in West Palm Beach, the theme of this year’s event wasHAVANA NIGHTS, and featured entertainers including D.J. Luke Hampel and the always luscious, ever fabulous Lupita Hollywood, Bunny Roadkill and Melissa St. John.
One highlight of this year’s Rainbow Ball was the presentation of MCCPB’s prestigious Ruby Slipper Award to entertainer Melissa St. John for her “tireless efforts to raise funds, advocate and educate on behalf of the LGBT community.”
Rainbow Ball co-chair Michael McKeich nominated St. John for this award, citing her 30-year record of raising funds “for almost every LGBTQ organization in Palm Beach County, including CAP (Comprehensive AIDS Program), Compass, Voices of Pride, SmartRide and the Metropolitan Community Church of the Palm Beaches.” The award recipient has been performing since the mid-1980s, when she started doing fundraisers for Mother’s Cupboard, a grassroots organization that helped to feed people with AIDS.
Citing the performer’s passion for her art and “willingness to share that passion for the greater good,” McKeich adds, “Melissa St. John never says ‘no’ when asked to do a fundraiser.”
The other co-chairs for Rainbow Ball 2018 were Ty Austin and Carlos Toro. The $16,000 raised at this year’s event will help MCCPB serve the local LGBTQ community and its allies.
