Zac Gallen twirled eight three-hit, shutout innings to lead the Palm Beach Cardinals (20-19) over the Jupiter Hammerheads (15-25) by a final of 7-1 on Wednesday evening at Roger Dean Stadium. Gallen walked two batters and struck out six as well over his eight innings of work.
The Cardinals took advantage of two Jupiter Hammerheads errors in the third inning to grab three more runs and go up 4-0. Darren Seferina and Edmundo Sosa both reached on errors to start the frame. Chris Chinea singled in Seferina, while Leobaldo Pina singled in Sosa. Chinea got to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch to give Palm Beach the four run lead.
The Beach Bird would not score again until the seventh inning to take the 7-0 lead. Seferina and Sosa started the inning with back-to-back singles. Seferina advanced on a Casey Turgeon fly ball and scored on a passed ball that got Sosa to second. Chinea singled putting runners on the corners for Pina. With Pina at the plate, a wild pitch scored Sosa putting Chinea at second. Pina then drove in Chinea on a single to give the Cardinals the 7-0 lead.
Sam Tewes took over for Gallen in the ninth and got two quick outs. He gave up a home run to John Silviano to make it a 7-1 game. Tewes struck out Roy Morales looking to end the game and to preserve the 7-1 victory over Jupiter and the series victory.
Palm Beach will look to get the four game sweep tomorrow at 6:30 PM EST as Derian Gonzalez faces off against Cody Poteet.
