PBCLS Expands Literacy and Language Offering

Palm Beach County Library System’s Adult Literacy Project now offers a free and easy tool to help non-English speakers improve their English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. “Basic ESL® Online English Learning for Libraries” provides native language support in 19 languages and enables learners to access multimedia ESL tutorials in any of our 17 locations or wherever Wi-Fi is available. The program is available on the Library website at www.pbclibrary.org/online-research.

The Adult Literacy Project also offers programs for members of the community who want to learn English in a comfortable and informal conversational environment.  English Exchange programs are offered at the Main Library and the Belle Glade, Clarence E. Anthony (South Bay), Greenacres, Glades Road, Lantana Road, Loula V. York (Pahokee), Royal Palm Beach, and West Boca branches. Visit the website for dates and times http://www.pbclibrary.org/services/adult-literacy-project.

With approximately 70,000 adults in Palm Beach County who lack basic reading and writing skills, the Adult Literacy Project trains and pairs volunteer tutors with English-speaking students for one-on-one sessions to improve literacy skills. The Glades Literacy Program offers residents of Belle Glade and surrounding areas one-on-one and group activities to improve literacy skills.

The Adult Literacy Project was established in 1985 and works in conjunction with the Library Literacy Friends, Inc. to help improve literacy skills for English speakers and non-English speakers as well.
