Poems with Purpose

Today,  Holly DressON NOT Holly DressOFF, author of #30DifferentMicrophonesIn30days, as well as the founder of the #PauseReflectMoveForward movement,  brings us the seventeenth edition of our continuing series, “Poetry with Purpose.

We are strong, we are beautiful, we are women

We are strong, we are beautiful, we are women

It does come with a price

Whether or not you have

Women have had to pay their dues

Over the years

And have shed many tears

Every time we fall

We get back up

We are so tough

Some of us have thought we aren’t enough

Some may never see the day

That they are

Some hold onto the scar

Because it feels comfortable

It is challenging to grow

Going through life

Not sure of which way to go

Some look in the mirror

And critique ourselves

When we really should be uplifting ourselves

As of right now

There aren’t classes in school to teach our girls or boys

To love themselves

The books on the shelves?

Talk about the past

As much as that is important

So is the person reading about the past

How much longer will this last?

Because it has always been done?

It isn’t too late

We can create

A society in which everyone not only likes who they are, but loves who they are

If children are our future?

Don’t you think we should teach them the right way?

Learn from our wrongs?

Teach them that their voice matters

Their ideas matter

Just maybe

It will help stop the endless chatter

You know

The voice inside our head

That keeps us from moving forward

The self doubt

The limitations we put upon ourselves we can all do without

If we don’t teach?

How will they learn?they will have to wait till their fire

To burn then yearn

Then long

And feel as if they don’t belong

The world as it is

Needs an innerworking shift

One to uplift

A place where someone can go and others believe in them more than they believe in themselves

A place to dream

It may seem

A bit out there

Why not?

We can be the change we wish to see in this world

And it can start with one word
