South Florida Fair memorial golf tournament to raise money for student scholarships

The South Florida Fair’s John Picano, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournamentwill take place Fri., June 1, at Mayacoo Lakes Country Club. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. Tee off is at 8:45 a.m. An awards luncheon will follow.

The annual golf tournament usually attracts a sell-out crowd of golfers. Registration for a single player is $275. Volunteer John Severson is serving as committee chair. Event sponsors include Foster and Fuchs, Accurate Parking, Lanier Upshaw, KAST Construction, Gulfstream Goodwill, Hedrick Brothers and Haas Wilkerson.

The golf tournament is named in honor of John Picano, who served as the South Florida Fair’s public relations director for almost two decades. The 2017 tournament raised nearly $25,000 and the silent auction at this year’s Junkanoo event resulted in more than $16,000. Proceeds from these events support its scholarship fund and educational programs.

The South Florida Fair Scholarship fund provides 14 scholarships annually and the winners are able to use the money at any accredited institution.More than half a million dollars in scholarships have been awarded.

The South Florida Fair is produced by the South Florida Fair/Palm Beach County Expositions, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, andhas a longstanding tradition of raising funds for educational and charitable purposes.
