May the Fourth Be With You/Revenge of the Fifth

As one of the most iconic days on the Star Wars calendar, May the Fourth has come to be celebrated the world over as the day when Jedi, Sith, and even Greys can come together in their love of one of the greatest film franchises of all time.

According to scholars, the reference was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Thatcher’s political party, the Conservatives, placed a congratulatory advertisement in The London Evening News that stated “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”

Since then, fans of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, and even Jar Jar have come to call the day their own, and join in the celebration of their geekdom in many ways.
To learn more about the saga and how it impacts our daily lives, we reached out to our favorite library employee, Adam Davis, the director of system services for the Palm Beach County Library System, who replied at light speed with  selections that even Jabba the Hut would love!

Travel to your closest branch or find them on the web! As always, we’d like to thank Adam Davis, director of system services for the Palm Beach County Library System, for all his help in putting together this list.

It has often been said that the theatre of the mind is the most entertaining, as through reading we are transformed to worlds even more amazing than those shown on even the largest screen in the Star Wars Universe. However, if seeing the movies on the small screen interests you, you’re in luck.

On Thursday, May the Fourth, TBS will be presenting all six of the original Star Wars films on their network, starting with The Phantom Menace at 6:40am ET/PT and running all the way through to Return Of The Jedi, which begins at 8:15pm ET/PT. Those wanting to include The Force Awakens and Rogue One in their marathons will have to break out their Blu-rays. TBS also confirms that this Star Wars Day marathon will be an annual tradition from now on. You can check out the full schedule, along with a promo for the marathon, below:
