Thousands enjoy foodie feats of fabulousness at the Sweet Corn Fiesta

This afternoon, April 29, 2018, thousands of food fans gathered under the tent of tastiness at the South Florida Fairgrounds to bask in the glory of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, as some of the greatest stomachs in the world joined together to consume as much sweet corn as possible in a twelve minute period during the 18th annual Sweet Corn Fiesta.

This yearly outing, which featured Kids shucking contests, Adult shucking and amateur eating, as well as the
International Corn Eating Contest featuring Major League Eating, is a celebration of the sweet corn growing season buttered with a family festival of children’s games, music, and, oh yes, mouth-watering and locally grown sweet corn.

After the amateur events were completed, it was time for the real action to begin. The competitors took to the makeshift eating arena, each with the feeling that it was their turn to shine in the spotlight, if only for a moment.

Soon, however, it became obvious who the real eaters were, and the kernels truly started to fly!

In the end, it came down to three men. Three men whose stomachs absorbed more corn than most men eat in a year. Three men who will have an interesting time in the restroom in the days to come!

In third place was 2016 champion Yasir Salem, whose Tallahassee Two Hand technique led him to consume 50 ears of corn in 12 minutes.

In second place for the second year in a row was former basketball player turned professional eater Gideon Oji with 56 ears of corn in 12 minutes. In first place was last year’s winner Carmen Cincotti, who consumed 58 ears in 12 minutes; hardly a record pace, but still quite impressive to be sure.

The annual Sweet Corn Fiesta is an event of the Western Palm Beach County Farm Bureau, co-produced by the South Florida Fair and presented by the Sunshine Sweet Corn Farmers of Florida.

We invite you to view our profiles of the professional eaters who battled here, as well as others around the world, in our Masters of Mastication Series.

Happy eating!
